Re: Windows 10, Workstation 10, no LAN bridge

Experiencing the same problem with VMnet0 not showing until I click Change Settings.  Even hitting Restore Defaults only works until next launch of VMware Workstation 12 Pro.  I have noticed if I Run as Administrator it appears to show every time but when I start my second VM with Bridged networking enabled it seems to freeze on occasion.  Anyone solved this?

Fusion 8.1.1 - Sound Card not working in MS-DOS

Trying to install the SB16 drivers in MS-DOS 6.22 but the sound card keep disconnecting and the drivers can't find the card.  Can't install drivers in Windows 3.1 (card disconnected...).

Trying to "reconnect" the sound card does not work.  I've removed and added the sound card and it does the same thing.

SB16 support for DOS in Fusion 8 seems to be broken.

Re: vCenter Server 5.1 to 6.0u2 failing with error "Uninstallation of 5.x products failed with error '1612'."

Hi,

Below Log messages are started when installer was trying to uninstall previous version of vCenter, that is vCenter 5.1 in your case.

At this step installer is not able to locate the vCenter MSI file to Uninstall vCenter 5.1

I think, When you had installed vCenter 5.1, you had setup files/ISO at D:\Software\VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-880471\vCenter-Server\.

Now during Upgrade process, it is looking for vCenter 5.1 MSI files at the same path for uninstallation of 5.1 vCenter service.

First RED line, probably cached msi of vCenter 5.1 installation is removed from server over the time.

I think you have mounted vCenter 6 ISO on z: drive, am not 100% sure about this, but you can confirm it.

To fix this, I would suggest you to Mount/extract file of vCenter 5.1 ISO file on same previous path (as above RED line), Mount ISO of vCenter 6.x to new Drive Letter and start the upgrade process.

It should be able to find the previous version of vCenter MSI file.

Let me know what happens.

Hello Marcus,

I read your blogs for vSphere Capacity planning PowerCLI script.  I was trying to download it but it seems that URL is moved out or no longer exist.

I have urgent requirements for vSphere Capacity planning in my environment and running through hard time to get something handy.

Does this script work any kind of environment?

if yes, pls help me to share the script and make it workable for me too. It would be highly appreciated !

I have 10 different VCenters and i have read only access to my ID.

any help would be highly appreciated !

Hi,

This seems to be a Hardware Firmware or Driver issue.

are you using HP's Custom ISO image or VMware's ESXi ISO image?

Please try installation with different ISO image.

No..nothing is displayed when I execute that command.  Time to chat with the vCenter admins.

I appreciate the help.

This is a bit of an old post but, just in case anyone else finds it on Google (as I did) and is after a reporting tool for VMWare, I thought I'd point out that our company has created a tool which automatically documents VMWare environments.

I hope it's ok to share a link to it here: VMware Reporting

VMware Tools failing to start at boot

$

Running Fusion Pro 8.02 on El Capitan 10.11.3

Downloaded Lubuntu 16.04 and verified with SHA hash

Created new VM Guest without issue...

Updated OS, installed VMware Tools without installing the dependencies (gcc, make, binutils & kernel sources) as I didn't know it needed them and nothing came up during the install saying it needed them.

After reboot, I was not able able to drag files from the host to the guest (but could copy and paste for some reason)...

I installed a couple of programs with Synaptic and rebooted...

After reboot, the copy and paste no longer functioned, my screen resolution was crap and window resize no longer worked properly...

When I looked into the issue on Google, it soon appeared that VMware Tools had failed to load at boot...

I then discovered that the tools needed the afore-mentioned dependencies, so I trashed the VM and started from scratch...

I updated the OS, installed the dependencies, installed VMware Tools and rebooted...

I still could not drag files from the host to the guest (but could copy and paste for some reason)...

I tried shared folders and it worked also...

I figured it was an issue with Lubuntu and carried on...

I installed a couple of programs with Synaptic and rebooted...

After reboot, the copy and paste no longer functioned, my screen resolution was crap and window resize no longer worked properly...

Is there some way to get the tools to load at boot?

There is very little info on Google (for Fusion) and nothing from the search on the forum regarding this...

16.04 Ubuntu and 16.04 Xubuntu both installed the open-vm-tools during the install and everything worked flawlessly; unfortunately I don't like either of the user interfaces for those OS's. I wish Lubuntu would do the same but I have no control over that...

Is there anyone out there that has successfully installed the VMware Tools on Lubuntu 16.04?

Is there anyone out there that has successfully installed the open-vm-tools on Lubuntu 16.04?

Could someone direct me to some documentation regarding how to install either tool successfully?

I have read KB 2050592 and 1022525

I have removed and installed vmware tools many times and it refuses to work

Brutal

Help?

Datacenter Migration - Replication Deployment

Hello,

I am working on migrating our production datacenter from our corp office to a brand new colocation site. vCenter at the corp office is running version 5.1 and vCenter at the colo is running version 6.0 (new install). Would deploying the latest version of the replication applicance at both sites be supported considering the version mismatch?

Would appreciate any insight.

one step forward.... then some back.

I carefully backed up the entire VM to an external hard drive and disconnected it. Attempted to power up the existing VM and got this message:

Not quite sure what state I'm in now, but it seems this failed snapshot is still the culprit. How do I convince the machine there is no snapshot? I'm not going to delete Anything (yet).

Re: How new vmware-tools linux works related with HGFS shares support?

$

Well, strange no one, not even VMware guys come on this subject. IMHO is something really interesting, I'm pretty much always use shared folders between guests and host, it is so easy and simple WHEN IT WORKS.

The fact no one come on this thread, show what I always think: products like Workstation are deeply under utilized, IMHO average people use 30/40 per cent of the software potential.

Then, having few hours and few guests Linux machines of many kind in hand (working on tools in both modes, hgfs.ko or Fuse), I investigated and found how it works by myself.

Here what I found.

Recent versions of VMware Tools for Linux seems now to check for installed Fuse package on installed guest system and when they found it, they try to use vmhgfs-fuse (formerly a Open-vm-tools executable) to mount hgfs shares without the need of hgfs.ko module and so without the need to compile kernel module often broken. For example, hgfs.ko build fine up to kernel branch 4.4 and it is broken again on 4.5.

The vmware-config-tools.pl script seems also able - also when it finds fuse package - to correctly configure autostart for hgfs shares.

That's all, and thats pretty usefull for me. Hope it will be for others too.

Re: Fusion 8.1.1 - Sound Card not working in MS-DOS

Hi Truckweb,

VMware Fusion does not support SB16 sound at this time.  The SB16 emulation was only ever implemented for VMware Workstation (Player and Pro, on Linux and Windows hosts).  I think Fusion will allow a sound card to be added to the VM in case the VM is subsequently going to be migrated to Workstation, but it won't be able to make any sound while it is running on Fusion.

For what it's worth, I'm a fan of old-school sound hardware and Adlib music in particular, so I'm using some of my "spare time" at VMware to get SB16 working on Fusion... but we're not there yet.

Cheers,

Re: ESXi 6U1 3380124 - HP BL460c G7 mit Mezzanine NC382m (BCM5709 FW 7.4.0) - Purple Screen of Death beim Neustart oder Herunterfahren

Hi,

i'm also experiencing this error with the NC382m in a BL460cG7 having a PSOD on shutdown/reboot.

To be precise, the PSoD takes place after the followingwhilst observing the shutdown on console

> USB Passthrough disabled

> Calling VMKernel shutdown

> ...

> Calling BNX2 driver shutdown

> BAM! PSOD

Unfortunately neither HPE, nor VMware were of great help - blaming each other ... although four servers show this behavior.

I tried different driver versions and ended up with drivers from "QLG-NetXtremeII-7.0-3741904" from "VMware ESXi 5.5 Driver CD 2.713.10.v55.4 for QLogic Network/iSCSI/FCoE Driver Set"

Download VMware Horizon (mit View)

(IDK why it's listed at Horizon, it's the ESXi 5.5 driver CD) - it brings bnx2-2.2.6a.v55.4 ..

Unfortunately this didn't help me at all, so i reminded myself of an old bug with that NIC : VMware KB:    ESX/ESXi host loses network connectivity with a Broadcom bnx2 driver FTQ dump

Although the behavior was quite different, i tried the mentioned workaround:

esxcfg-module -s 'disable_msi=1' bnx2

and i tried multiple reboots afterwards ... all (except the first) succeeded without a purple screen ...

Maybe this works for you as well ...

But i do have one more question to you Haferbrei ..

Since this mezzanine is quite aged, i cannot even to FW 7.4.0, HPE stopped apparently supporting the NC382m with FW 5.2.3 (with the broadcom firmware updater), so how did you get FW 7.4.0 on that card ?

That firmware (>5.2.3) is only supported through the QLogic NX2 firmware update utility, which in turn does not support the NC382m ...

*prost*

Alex
